WRT Jesus' response, I always thought that it was interesting that Jesus (who was only asked to give a single commandment), gave a second commandment (even saying that the second is like it): to love your neighbor as yourself.
So, one can interpret that as saying that loving others is almost as important as loving God--or, to more accurately quote Jesus, loving others is like loving God.
